	The Truth About The USS Cole Bombing

Conspiracy is an Absolute Fact, when we are talk about something Crimes of the State commit we are saying there is more to the story then meet the eye and the Official story does not make sense, people are true fact patriots who stand up and question their Government, people who don’t question anything are sheep, Maa, Maa, Maa, Maa.

 

Conspiracy is simply defined as two or more people agreeing to commit any criminal act. Conspiracy is one of the most often prosecuted charges in the United States.

 

The United States Government which ever party is in charge and control the White House has a history of doing Terrorist Attacks against its people for political purposes lets look closer at United States of America history.

When high level government officials agree that the Geneva Conventions are “quaint,” “obsolete,” and that they are not going to follow the letter of the law , and that they are going to condone torture , this is a conspiracy, simply one of many that remains unprosecuted at this time.

Because these conspirators are high-level government officials, the hoi polloi (that’s you) tend to assume that prosecutions will simply not occur.

This is a bit of a self-fulfilling prophecy, which has led to the culture of open criminality in Washington D.C. that we witness today.

Under the Nuremberg standard most of the U.S. Congress as well as the White House are open to charges of war crimes, with the illegal invasion of Iraq.

Crimes have indeed been committed, agreed to and executed.

Aggressive war is simply not legal under the UN Charter, which is the “supreme law of the land” according to our own Constitution.

First: The Old Pearl Harbour

One of the most ignorant arguments that I hear today goes along the line of, “A government conspiracy is impossible – something would have leaked.”

False.

It took more than 50 years for the truth to come out about the Pearl Harbour provocation, and subsequent naval attack, which was not at all a “surprise attack,” as it now, exists in America’s collective imagination.

Most people do not know this history, still, and they believe the myth rather than the facts.

Some may even consider this deliberate sacrifice of 3,000 American servicemen a sort of “noble lie” that served the “greater good” of getting the U.S. involved in World War II, the so-called “good” war.

But let’s establish the facts of the case, as is the standard prosecutorial model.

Robert B. Stinnett’s Day Of Deceit provides original navy and intelligence documents obtained under the Freedom Of Information Act.

These communications from 1940-41 show unequivocally that the Pearl Harbour attack was not only expected, but also deliberately provoked so that the Japanese would commit the “first overt act of war.”

 

Lt. Commander Arthur McCollum first suggested this specific plan of provocation in October 1940 in a memo.

McCollum’s October 7, 1940 memo to provoke Japan was written less than two weeks after Japan, Italy and Germany signed the “Tripartite Pact” on September 27, 1940.

This “Axis Powers” alliance linked the war in Europe to any war in the Pacific involving the Empire of Japan.

It was the White House’s intent to enter the war in Europe against the Nazis, but an overwhelming majority ( up to 96% ) of the American public wanted to stay out.

Eight specific points were spelled out in order to maneuver the Japanese into attacking the US fleet in the Pacific.

 

President Franklin D. Roosevelt, “…adopted all eight of the provocations — including where he signed executive orders.

 

And other information in Navy files offers conclusive evidence that he did see [the memo].”

Interviewer: The memo is addressed to two of Roosevelt’s top advisors, and you include the document where one of them is agreeing with McCollum’s suggested course of action.

Stinnett: Yes, Dudley Knox, who was his very close associate.

Interviewer: FDR and his military advisors knew that if McCollum’s eight actions were implemented — things like keeping the Pacific fleet in Pearl Harbour, and crippling Japan’s economy with an embargo — there was no question in their minds that this would cause Japan — whose government was very militant — to attack the United States.

Correct?

 

Stinnett: That is correct, and that is what Commander McCollum said.

He said, “If you adopt these policies then Japan will commit an overt act of war.”

The “Intelligence Failure” of Pearl Harbour

A U.S. intelligence communications relay station was located on the other side of Hawaii, but the classified transmissions were not automatically (or otherwise) sent on to the one person in the world who needed them the most: Admiral Kimmel, the commander of the Pearl Harbour fleet.

Stimmet establishes this, among others, and in a highly credible BBC investigation called Sacrifice at Pearl Harbour (1989) .

The Roosevelt White House was aware that the Japanese fleet was reroute to attack the sitting duck American fleet, moored at Pearl Harbour.

Even several hours before the attack began US intelligence intercepted a message from Japan to its ambassador in the U.S. – declaring war.

Still Admiral Kimmel was not notified, and he was hung out to dry as the scapegoat in the wake of the massive military defeat at Pearl.

Perhaps this unfair disgracing of Kimmel’s name is what motivated the decades of hard investigation that finally led to these revelations of truth.

Perhaps that is why that in the “New Pearl Harbour” no one is scapegoat, and no blame is assigned for “Intelligence Failures” on and around 9/11/01.

 

 

The “New Pearl Harbour”

Given this reality, this context, does not the Project For a New American Century call for a “...catastrophic and catalysing event, like a new Pearl Harbour,” in September of 2000 take on a more expansive dimension?

You see, the American public may be ignorant about the facts of the successful Pearl Harbour provocation, but it is stretching it to assume that professional foreign policy planners are also ignorant about the true nature of America’s entrance into World War II.

This appears to be one of those “insider” areas of understanding on the grand chessboard of international power projection.

Other Lies

This may come as news to some with readers, but the corporate media routinely censors a lot of the news concerning official crimes.

This has gotten much more obvious of late, with the consolidation of the big broadcasters, but it has long been the norm.

This censorship is obvious in cases like CIA connected planes caught trafficking narcotics in Mexico, which is unmentionable on national network news.

 

In other cases, the government simply refuses to disclose the evidence for decades, and the news media refuse to investigate on their own.

Gulf of Tonkin – There was no North Vietnamese attack on the USS Maddox on August 4, 1964.

This attack was a fabrication.

Literally millions of deaths and injuries were the result of this fraud.

John F. Kennedy Assassination – The Warren Commission’s theories have no connection or relevance to John F. Kennedy’s fatal head shot, which exited the back of his head with a grapefruit-sized exit wound.

The overwhelming majority of doctors and nurses in Dallas, military doctors in Bethesda, morticians, x-ray technicians, Secret Service agents and others consistently testified this to.

WTC Attack, 1993 – The bomb that killed 6 people and injured a thousand others was not built by Osama bin Laden.

It was built by undercover FBI provocateur Emad Ali Salem, who was also a colonel in Egyptian intelligence.

Oklahoma City Federal Building Bombing – The truck bomb was insufficient to cause the observed damage, as concluded by Air Force Brigadier General and ballistics/ordnance specialist Benton Partin in his investigation.

Demolition charges were placed inside the secure facility on supporting columns, some of which did not explode and were removed by the bomb squad, as reported in real time .

CIA connected drug trafficking – Even after the CIA Inspector General admitted it to, this ongoing conspiracy is covered up by the government and by corporate media.

Numerous other examples exist, and they point in one direction conspiracy is a fact, not a theory.

U.S. leaders (elected and not) have track records which we would be fools to simply ignore.

These numerous exposed conspiracies are not the product of delusional mental patients – although those who have a vested interest in hiding the facts promote this image.

These crimes are very real, always covered up, and numerous false “theories” accompany them in order to cloud the waters and to confuse the public.

Another trait common to high-level conspiracies is that they are never prosecuted.

The American public has been unable to demand justice and to get it.

The media’s denial of the existence of the crime – at all – in conjunction with its repeated ridicule of sceptics, tends to suppress the legitimate public outrage, and to marginalize dissent.

In other words, the liars are winning.

The Clouding

If Executive Branch conspiracies are unprosecutable this could explain the tortured contortions of many media personalities when reporting on them.

They have personal stakes in remaining on the correct – if not necessarily the true – side of the historical record.

Other than the corporate paid “professional journalist” class, a number of “left” and “alternative” personalities have sided with the government, and against the 9/11 “conspiracists” who are rarely – if ever – given an opportunity to present any actual evidence.

Outspoken voices in the government’s camp are Chomsky and Cockburn , Taibbi , Corn , Monbiot and Rothschild .

These named writers resort to ad hominem attacks, without the common courtesy of an open debate of the facts.

 

The censorship in the “alternative” press has been disgraceful, openly biased and hostile.

This serves the purpose of clouding the issue, and of obscuring known hard facts.

This faction has helped – for some unknown motive – to keep the alternative view and the damning suppressed evidence out of sight of the majority of the population.

In other words, the presumed opposition media ... isn’t.

There are some issues that they just will not stand in opposition.

When the opposition media and leaders destroy their own reputations by defending the Warren Commission, and the Lee Harvey Oswald lone gunman theory, it is both shocking and enlightening.

They are not to be trusted, and this should inspire the reader to seek out other sources of historical information – better sources.

There is precious little that can unite an American majority to rise up and demand justice.

The understanding that 9/11 was high treason has that power.

It therefore has been the object of massive opposition from the beginning.

Attempts were made to make 9/11 a sacred event, beyond comment, beyond question, even though the government has still not proven what actually happened that day, and has outrageously withheld as much evidence as they could get away with hiding.

The 9/11 complicity issues have the power to unite a large block ( 62% in a recent Scripps poll ) behind exposing the truth of 9/11.

 

Such a revelation could bring down a lot of entrenched politicians who have gone out of their way to keep 9/11 covered up.

They therefore fear the truth.

They fear the backlash once a majority learn the whole truth and respond accordingly.

 

“Americans overwhelmingly wanted to stay out of World War II. Gallup polls in 1939 showed that 96% opposed “joining the European war” and declaring war on Germany.”

Introduction

 

The Official Story

The so-called “Holy Lands” have never seen peace in the last 2000 years.

On the one hand, you have the Jews, claiming that it is their land because this invisible man who lives in the clouds and who talks only to them told them so.

Then you have the Muslims, claiming that it is their land because this invisible man who lives in the clouds and who talks only to them told them so.

Add to that a half dozen “Holy Crusades” coming down from the Europeans, claiming that it is their land because this invisible man who lives in the clouds and who talks only to them told them so, and you can see why so much blood has flowed onto the dust of that part of the world at the hands of armies claiming to represent this or that loving god as justification for all manner of vile horrors, up to and including cannibalism!.

Recent weeks have seen a renewal of the tensions along the Gaza between Israel and the Palestinians.

In a modern world where the Internet has obviated the ability of the mainstream media to put a particular spin on world events, the Israelis found themselves in the position of losing public support for their Gaza strip policies.

 

 

Most people in the world are well aware that the Palestinians were one of the few people not to have harmed the Jews during WW2, yet when it came time to create the Nation of Israel, it was the Palestinians who were dislocated, then treated as troublemakers for complaining about the loss of their ancestral homes to a flood of mostly European immigrants.

 

Israel might have the military advantage and the unwavering support of the United States government, but as young Palestinian schoolboys were gunned down and oil prices soared and the Oslo accords remained not implemented, the American people began to wonder just who was the “good guys” and who the “bad guys” here.

 

It was right at this moment, when Americans were starting to view the Palestinians not as terrorists but as a displaced people with legitimate political grievances, that the USS Cole was supposedly attacked.

 

But already, indications are that the initial story of an attack by Arab terrorists may be a cover story.

The above graphic, which appeared in the media, illustrates the story put out regarding the attack.

A small boat, pretending to assist the USS Cole in mooring at a refuelling dock, moors the bow line, then motors around to take another mooring line to pass over to the dock, then bumps up against the USS Cole and explodes an on board bomb.

This high-resolution photograph ABOVE from Aden puts to bed the myth that two Arabs stood to attention as their little rubber boat rammed the USS Cole after “quickly leaving the jetty”.

Which Jetty?

The USS Cole is tied up to the outermost buoy, literally miles from shore, in a terribly vulnerable position.

The story was weak to begin with.

Ships tied up to docks to not bother tying off to outer moorings, and more to the point, US Navy ships use messenger lines to get mooring lines over to docks, precisely because smaller boats between the large ships and the dock are at risk.

 

Oddly enough, the first officially released photo of the actual damage to USS Cole was tinted a deep blue.

Later photos revealed more problems with the official story, showing that USS Cole had been docked with the starboard against the refuelling dock.

The outer mooring buoys described in the original story simply do not exist.

Finally, the United States Navy admitted that the USS Cole had actually been docked for ½ hour and was already transferring fuel at the time of the blast, proving that the story of an attack while mooring the ship was a total fiction.

In addition, initial reports that the dingy seen floating near USS Cole at the time of the explosion was actually unmanned have resurfaced via statements made by three surviving USS Cole deck crew.

Reuter’s news originally reported that the explosion had occurred ON BOARD the USS Cole, and recently, authorities at the Yemen seaport claim that a security camera videotape of the incident does not show a small boat near USS Cole at the moment of the explosion.

That video was turned over to the FBI, which then nglishd that the tape shows nothing at all and appears to have been edited.

The Yemeni government says the FBI did the editing, the FBI says the Yemeni did it.

Was the explosion really a terrorist attack?

Or was it, as initially claimed, an accident during refuelling quickly converted to a terrorist attack for political gain?

 

Is the bombing of USS Cole a staged event to incite the American people into blind acceptance of a particular point of view?

One thing is clear, had it been a genuine terrorist attack, they chose the one point along the hull least likely to sink the USS Cole.

Had they moved their boat of explosives either forward or aft, the explosion would have ruptured the missile magazines, the resulting blast from which would have blown USS Cole into a thousand pieces.

Yet another controversial question is why the USS Cole was even in that port to begin with.

USS Cole had more than sufficient fuel to reach her destination without refuelling.

US War ships rarely refuel at Aden harbour as the Yemeni government refuses to guarantee the security and safety of the ship.

The security at Aden brings up another controversial issue.

Given that there was no security within the harbour, it seems odd that the crew of USS Cole were not taking any security precautions themselves, apparently under orders.

Worse, a DIA intelligence analyst had tried to warn the Navy of a threatened attack, but his warnings went unheeded and he has since resigned.

The overlapping instances of reduced security and ignored warnings strongly suggestive of the theory that the USS Cole was deliberately set up for an attack for political purposes much as FDR set up Hawaii to be attacked by the Japanese to force the US into the Second World War.

Chapter 1

 

Wake Up And Smell The Cordite

al-Badawi.

Do you recognise that name?

Didn’t think so.

He’s one of the people that the US government alleges carried out a suicide bomb attack on the USS Cole as it sat at a Yemeni harbour in 2000.

The official story goes that Badawi and his accomplices purchased a small boat, loaded it with 500lbs of explosives and some ready-made suicide bombers who then drove it alongside the Cole while it was docked and... Kaboom.

Here’s a photo of the damage.

Note the lack of blast damage to the ship around the hole that we are told was caused by 500lbs of conventional explosives.

 

For some reason, that hole reminds me of a WWII movie?

Hang on, it’s coming back to me, yes, I can see it now, a white trail rocketing towards a ship, just below the surface of the water.

Then an explosion at the water line and a relatively neat round hole in the hull.

Yes indeed, military explosives are so very efficient.

But no, my eyes must be deceiving me, it was a dingy-load of fertilizer that did it.

 

Just for comparison, here’s an image of just some of the damage done by a conventional 500lb bomb (the type used by “terrorists”) that was detonated in London’s financial district in 1996.

 

As it turns out, unnamed “officials” at the time of the attack on the Cole were also fairly sceptical of the official story, and were more inclined to think that the damage done to the Cole was the result of military hardware

Officials said examination of the Cole indicated that the explosive used was even more sophisticated than initially thought.

The penetrating force and the damage deep in the interior strongly suggested that the bomb was a “shaped charge,” designed to focus the explosion rather than allow it to spread in all directions, as with a typical truck bomb, officials said.

“With every piece of information, it becomes a more sophisticated operation, ” one official said.

The officials have not disclosed the specific type of device used, though the use of a directed explosive led to speculation that the device operated likes and warhead.

Such a device is a more sophisticated weapon than those used by most terrorist organizations, and possibly came from a military stockpile.

 

 

Despite this, the image of a bunch of wild-eyed “terrorists” sitting atop 500lbs of cow manure in a dingy, and somehow slinking up to the side of the Cole undetected, persisted and was successfully implanted in the minds of the world’s citizens.

 

How could such a thing have possibly happened?

 

Well, initially by way of good old-fashioned lies:

Adm. Vernon Clark, the chief of naval operations, had argued that because the small boat was involved in the mooring, the crew of the Cole “had no reason to suspect . . . that there was anything to be suspicious about,” as he put it in an interview on “The News Hour with Jim Lehrer” last week.

“The reason that a ship, a small boat like this, could get in this proximity to the USS Cole is that it was part of the party, the support party that was assisting the ship in tying up to their berthing position,” Clark said in an interview with CBS News.

Later however, other Navy officials made a fool of the good Admiral by reporting that the Cole had been berthed for more than 90 minutes before the explosion occurred, leaving no apparent reason as to how the alleged boat bombers could have got so close to the ship.

 

That is, if there were any boat bombers at all.

 

The BBC also reported on the type of explosives used stating that: “the [Yemeni] president said samples of explosives taken from the destroyer had been identified by US investigators as of a type available only in Israel, the USA, and two Arab countries ” (two Arab countries that get it from the US or Israel).

 

The Yemeni President, Ali Abdullah Salih, further stated : “ we believe Israel might be involved in such incidents . ”

 

 

 

Not long thereafter however, the Yemeni President seemed to fall in line with the official story and claimed that Yemeni officials had “found the boat” (amazingly durable these dingys) and various other pieces of evidence that proved that a group of al-Qaeda terrorists carried out the attack.

 

Yemeni officials even stated that the “terrorists” had tried to bomb the destroyer USS ‘The Sullivans’ while it was in the same Yemeni port earlier in 2000, but on that occasion, the terrorists’ dingy full of fertilizer sank before they could carry out their misguided attack.

 

A core benefit of the attack on the Cole is to found in the fact that then Defence Secretary William S. Cohen used it to further establish Bin Laden as arch terror chief.

 

Cohen stated : “investigators were looking at anti-Western guerrilla groups, including exiled Saudi dissident Osama bin Laden.”

 

Further investigations into the Cole attack eventually turned up a group of likely suspects, many of whom were veteran Muslim fighters of the war in Afghanistan and Bosnia where they had essentially been recruits of the CIA.

 

Coincidence?

The success of the Islamic Revolution in Iran in 1979 and the international jihad against the Soviet troops in Afghanistan promoted by the covert action division of the USA’s Central Intelligence Agency (CIA), with the help of the Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) of Pakistan, led to many negative consequences, which ultimately contributed to the Pakistan-Afghanistan region emerging as the epicentre of punishment terrorism of the most ruthless kind motivated by pan-Islamic ideas.

 

[...] To rally round the Muslims of the world against the USSR, the CIA consciously encouraged religious fanaticism and pan-Islamism.

The intelligence agencies of the US and the West European countries encouraged jobless Muslims in many countries to go to Pakistan undergo military training in the newly sprung-up Wahabi-Deobandi madrasas and join the Afghan Mujahideen.

Between 6,000 and 10,000 Muslims, the majority of them Arabs, went and fought against the Soviet troops in Afghanistan, with Saudi Arabia funding them, the ISI training and motivating them and the CIA and other Western intelligence agencies equipping them.

Osama bin Laden, then a blue-eyed boy of the CIA, played an active role in the training and motivation of these mercenaries and led them to battle against the Soviet troops.

In addition to the Arabs, jobless Muslims from the Jammu & Kashmir State of India, Bangla Desh, and the Arakan area of Myanmar, Southern Philippines, Malaysia and Indonesia were also encouraged by the CIA to join this mercenary brigade.

Fourthly, faced with the increasing difficulties encountered by its Slav troops in countering the CIA-instigated pan-Islamic mercenaries, Moscow started sending to Afghanistan the Muslim members of its Armed Forces recruited from the Central Asian Republics (Cars), Chechnya and Dagestan.

The pan-Islamism of the CIA’s mercenaries infected these troops.

[...] A number of new pan-Islamic organizations of Wahabi-Deobandi-Ahle Hadith orientation sprang up in Pakistani soil and these were given the leadership role by the US for leading the mercenary brigade to battle.

 

The most important amongst them were the Harkat-ul-Mujahideen (HUM), the Harkat-ul-Jihad-Al-Islami (HUJI) and the Lashkar-e-Toiba (LET).

The HUM and the HUJI were born out of the SSP and shared its anti-Shia orientation.

Zia and his ISI favoured all these organizations.

The HUM, which produced some of the best fighters of the Afghan war, was favoured by the CIA and got the lion’s share of the Stinger missiles, explosives and other equipment.

Towards the end of the 1980s, the HUM and the HUJI merged to form the Harkat-ul-Ansar (HUA) and separated again in 1998 after the USA designated the HUA as a foreign terrorist organization under a 1996 law in October 1997.

The Jaish-e-Mohammed (JEM) was formed in the beginning of 2000 by a split in the HUM.

After the withdrawal of the Soviet troops in 1988, the USA lost interest in Afghanistan and left the mercenary brigade in the lurch.

Promises made to these jobless Muslims at the time of their recruitment that after the war in Afghanistan was over, they would be helped to re-settle in the USA with lucrative jobs were not kept up.

Some of these mercenaries went back to their country of origin and joined the fundamentalist groups in fighting against their Governments (examples: Algeria, Tunisia and Egypt).

Others stayed behind and were diverted to J&K by the ISI.

The HUM and the HUJI were used by the ISI to rally round the dregs of the war of the 1980s and divert them to India.

 

They did so very successfully.

But, at the same time, they promoted jihad in Chechnya and Dagestan in Russia, Xinjiang in China, in the newly independent Cars, in Bangladesh, in the Arakan area of Myanmar and in the Southern Philippines.

The HUJI took over the leadership of the jihadi elements in Bangladesh and the HUM in the rest of the world, including the USA.

HUM cadres fought actively against the US Marines in Somalia.

Not having learnt any lessons from the sequel to its policy of encouraging fanaticism and pan-Islamism in Afghanistan and despite the humiliation inflicted on the US troops in Somalia by the HUM in 1993, the CIA asked the ISI to divert part of the dregs of the HUM and the HUJI to Bosnia to assist the Muslims there in their fight against the Serbs.

The USA was aware of the presence and activities of bin Laden in Afghan territory since July 1996, but did not move vigorously against him as long as it was hopeful of getting the assistance of the Taliban for the construction of the oil and gas pipeline from Turkmenistan to Pakistan through the With area of Afghanistan by UNOCAL, the powerful American company.

It moved seriously against bin Laden only after UNOCAL withdrew from the project and after he had formed the International Islamic Front and issued in 1998 his first fatwa against the US

With all of the above in mind, consider the following information culled from news reports since the attack on the Cole

“ Six Yemeni suspects in the bombing of the USS Cole have been identified by sources close to the investigation, who say they share a background as fighters in the anti-Soviet war in Afghanistan in the 1980s.

 

Jamal al-Badawi, the most senior of the 6 suspects jailed in Yemen told investigators he received telephone instructions for the Oct. 12 bombing from a man in the United Arab Emirates, the Yemeni sources said..

Al-Badawi said he had met the man in Afghanistan during the war but had not seen him since, the sources said.”

”Investigators in Yemen say they hold six suspects in the bombing of the USS Cole.

All six are said to be Yemeni veterans of the Afghan war against the Soviets.

The main suspect was identified as Jamal al-Badawi .

“” The network also said another suspect, Jamal al-Badawi, admitted to investigators he trained in bin Laden’s guerrilla camps in Afghanistan and was sent with bin Laden’s forces to fight in Bosnia’s civil war. ABC News said the suspects’ stories provide the first direct links between bin Laden and the Cole bombing.”

Jamal al-Badawi , regarded as the most senior of the Cole suspects who have been arrested, told investigators that he received telephone instructions for the bombing from Mohammed Omar al-Harazi in the United Arab Emirates. Badawi said he had originally met Harazi in Afghanistan during the war.

According to US officials, Harazi, who sometimes uses the names Abdul Rahman Hussein al-Nashari or al-Nassir, is a cousin of the suicide bomber who blew up the US embassy in Nairobi in 1998 .

He had been a regular visitor to Aden but disappeared four days before the attack on the USS Cole.

 

So we have a mastermind of the Cole bombing – “al Nashari”, who is “chief of operations in the Persian Gulf “ no less, or so we are told.

 

Al Nashari was in fact captured in 2002 for his alleged part in the Cole attack.

SANAA, 26 August 2004 — A lawyer defending five Yemenis charged with the October 2000 attack on the warship USS Cole told a court in Sanaa yesterday that authorities had granted a security clearance to the main suspect in the attack.

The lawyer, Abdul-Aziz Al-Samawi, presented a document to the court giving the suspected mastermind of the attack Abdul-Raheem Al- Nashri a permit to pass military checkpoints without being subjected to inspection.

Al-Samawi said the office of the former Interior Minister Hussein Muhammad Arab issued the laissez-passer.

Al-Nashri and five other Yemenis were charged with the attack when the trial began on July7.

Five of the suspects were present in the court, while Al-Nashri is being tried in absentia.

Al-Nashiri is also suspected of involvement in attacks on the US embassies in Kenya and Tanzania in August 1998 that killed 224 people, and in the October 2002 attack on the French super tanker Limburg off south Yemen in which one Bulgarian crewmember was killed and 12 were wounded.

Washington has accused Al-Qaeda leader Osama Bin Laden of ordering the attack.

Bin Laden applauded the bombing in remarks broadcast on Al-Jazeera TV in February 2001 but denied his involvement.

Now let’s think about this.

 

A known terrorist was given a high-level security clearance by the Yemeni government, which facilitated him in planning the attack on the Cole.

 

Which would mean that the Yemeni government was openly siding with anti-American terrorists.

 

The strange thing is that in the aftermath of the attack on the Cole, the American government did not accuse the Yemeni government of supporting terrorism but instead called it a “partner in the war on terror”.

 

To make matters worse, and as we have seen, the Yemeni president initially came out and blamed Israel for the attack.

 

A logical explanation for this is that the Yemeni government gave free pass to the “terrorists” because said terrorists were working (either consciously or unconsciously) for the CIA and/or the Israeli Mossad and the Yemeni government was instructed to allow these terrorists to do their jobs, their job being to create the appearance of a terrorist attack on the USS Cole.

 

 

I say “appearance” because it is quite clear that a dingy-full of fertilizer with a couple of Jihadists perched on top definitely did NOT do the damage to the USS Cole.

 

Unfortunately, al-Nashari has never been available to give evidence at the trials that have taken place since his capture and therefore never had a chance to tell us who he really works for.

 

The reason is that the CIA have disappeared him into one of their black holes of rendition.

 

How unfortunate for the rest of us who would like to know what is really going on behind the “war on terror”.

 

Yet how fortunate for the American and Israeli governments who seem to have an awful lot to hide.

 

So we are left then with al Nashari’s protégé, the abovementioned al-Badawi.

 

Now al-Badawi’s story is a very interesting one.

 

He was already in custody in Yemen in January 2001.

 

Then in April 2003 he, along with 9 other suspects in the bombing of the Cole, escaped from their “tightly guarded intelligence building” either by breaking a window or digging a hole, no one seems quite sure.

 

Indeed, there seemed to be more than a little suspicion that the escapees, like al Nashari, had inside help, hence the reluctance of Yemeni officials to comment on the matter at the time.

 

Fortunately, Badawi was recapture d in May 2003.

 

 

 

 

Then, in September 2004, along with his disappeared mentor al Nashari, Badawi was sentenced to death by a court in Yemen for his alleged part in the bombing of the Cole.

 

Badawi’s lawyers successfully appealed, and in February 2005, his sentence was commuted to 15 years in jail.

 

Then, Badawi escaped again last week.

 

USS Cole plotter escapes prison

(CNN) – Interpol has issued “an urgent global security alert” after 23 “dangerous individuals” – including a man identified as the mastermind of the attack on the USS Cole in 2000 – escaped from a Yemeni prison.

The international crime-fighting organization said Sunday at least 13 of the 23 who escaped Friday were “convicted al Qaeda terrorists, some of whom were involved in attacks on U.S. and French ships in 2000 and 2002.”

“Al Qaeda terrorists have been deemed a serious threat to the entire world community by the U.N. Security Council, by Interpol and by a wide range of countries,” Interpol Secretary General Ronald K. Noble said in the statement.

They escaped via a 140-meter (150-yard) –long tunnel “dug by the prisoners and co-conspirators outside,” Interpol said.

“Their escape cannot be considered an internal problem for Yemen alone.”

 

 

 

Among the escapees was Jamal Ahmed Badawi , considered the mastermind behind the attack on the USS Cole on October 12, 2000.

Yemen – Investigators are looking into the possibility that Yemeni intelligence officers helped 23 al-Qaida prisoners – including a militant convicted in the 2000 USS Cole bombing – escape from an underground prison beneath a heavily guarded security headquarters , officials said Monday.

The prisoners escaped Friday, apparently by digging a tunnel some 180 yards long that emerged at a mosque, the security officials said.

It was not the first major prison escape for al-Qaida militants.

At least four members of the group broke out of a prison at Bagram, the main U.S. base in Afghanistan in July.

Among them was Omar al-Farouq, a top leader of al-Qaida in Southeast Asia.

Geez!

 

You’d think the US military would keep a better eye on these evil terrorists that are threatening all of our lives.

 

 

 

 

An investigation headed by the Yemeni interior minister has begun questioning intelligence officers, government and security officials said, speaking on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to divulge details on the probe.

“It couldn’t have happened without the coordination of high ranking officers in the intelligence,” said one official.

He pointed to possible militant infiltration of the intelligence agency, saying hundreds of Yemenis who fought in Afghanistan in the 1980s against Russian occupation were given jobs with the security forces when they returned.

“It is no surprise that many of these former fighters are sympathetic to al-Qaida,” he said.

Yemen’s interior ministry confirmed in a statement that the convicts escaped from the headquarters for the political security forces. It gave no further details.

The prison was underground in the headquarters, one of the most heavily guarded buildings in the capital.

A high wall and armed guards surround the compound, and all roads leading to it are blocked to vehicles.

The 23 militants, all of them convicted members of al-Qaida, were kept in the same cell, the officials said. [...]

Among the 22 other “al-Qaeda” militants that escaped with Badawi last week was one Fahd al-Quso, who had also escaped and been re-captured with Badawi in 2003.

 

 

Former FBI Assistant Director John O Neill spent many years attempting to understand the real nature of “Islamic terrorism” and its threat to America.

 

On October 14th 2000, two days after the attack on the Cole,

O Neill led a 200 strong team of FBI agents to the site of the attack.

 

Sadly, O Neill’s investigation did not get very far, yet it was not, as we might expect, Yemeni authorities that stonewalled O Neill , but rather the US’ own ambassador to Yemen, Barbara Bodine.

 

Bodine forced O Neill and most of his team out of Yemen less than a month after their arrival.

 

O Neill was prevented from returning to Yemen by the incoming Bush administration.

 

Now why would the US ambassador to Yemen, and by implication the Clinton and Bush governments, want to prevent an FBI agent from investigating the bombing of the USS Cole?

 

More to the point, why would the CIA refuse to give O Neill information that could have connected the people allegedly involved in the bombing of the Cole and the 9/11 attacks less than a year later?

 

You see, Fahad al-Quso, like Badawi, was originally arrested in December 2000 by Yemeni authorities that claimed he too was involved in the attack on the Cole.

 

O Neill was aware of this and was desperate to interview the man, who he believed had important information to divulge.

 

Yet due to the fact that his own government had effectively barred him from Yemen, O Neill could do nothing.

 

The really interesting point here is that the CIA already knew that, in addition to being involved in the USS Cole bombing, al-Quso had been at a January 2000 meeting in Malaysia with two other alleged members of al-Qaeda by the names of Nawaf Alhazmi and Khalid Almihdhar.

 

You probably don’t remember these two names, and you really aren’t meant to, but if you were to ask Dick Cheney, for example, he would tell you that those two “al-Qaeda” members were two of the alleged hijackers of Flight 77 that is alleged to have hit the Pentagon on September 11th 2001.

 

For some reason however, the CIA refused to provide O Neill with the information about the Malaysia meeting, information that would probably have allowed him to connect the people involved in the attack on the Cole to preparations for the 9/11 attacks.

 

Unable to take the obviously deliberate attempts to block his investigations, O Neill resigned from the FBI in mid 2001.

 

 

 

He was offered and accepted a job as security chief at the WTC in New York.

 

He started work on the 34th Floor of the WTC North tower on September 10th 2001.

 

He escaped the initial impact of Flight 11 into the North tower, but was apparently killed in the collapse while helping in the rescue attempt.

 

What a tangled web they weave.

 

The FBI was eventually allowed to interrogate Al-Quso themselves.

 

Guess which date they were permitted re-entry to Yemen?

 

September 12th 2001.

 

At the interrogation, al-Quso admitted the January 2000 Malaysia meeting with the two alleged Flight 77 hijackers.

 

One investigator called the missed opportunity of exposing the 9/11 plot through al-Quso’s connections “mind-boggling.”

 

Indeed, it is almost impossible for anyone to understand how the US government could take measures to actually facilitate the preparations for the 9/11 attacks while at the same time claim to be fighting terrorism.

 

What is needed, obviously, is a restructuring of our understanding of the nature of the “war on terror”, because the understanding provided to us by the US government simply doesn’t make sense.

 

 

 

 

 

Coming back to the present, when they heard of the escape of these two “key members of al-Qaeda”, a few American politicians were understandably a little nonplussed by the contrast between the US government’s claims about fighting terrorism and how easily they seem to allow these same terrorists to escape custody.

 

One Senator, Russ Feingold, wrote Secretary of State Condi Rice a couple of days ago to express his dismay

“Al-Badawi’s success in twice escaping Yemeni custody not only calls into question our security and counter-terrorism relationship with Yemen, but it also raises the question of whether or not we have in place the right partnerships and relationships to ensure that known al-Qaida operatives are successfully detained and prosecuted.

Senator Feingold is asking for a classified briefing “detailing what is known thus far about all of the suspects, the circumstances surrounding their detention and escape, current Yemeni and international efforts to find and detain them, and their possible current whereabouts and activities.

In addition, I request information about the extent to which the U.S. monitored these detainees prior to their escape, about what actions were taken to prevent a repeat of the escape in 2003, and about the assurances, commitments, and cooperation that the U.S. had received from the Yemeni government with respect to prosecuting those responsible for the attack.”

Pretty strong words.

 

 

 

 

We can only imagine the stream of expletives that Senator Feingold would direct at Condi if he knew that, in July last year, four other “al-Qaeda terrorists” escaped custody, but this time they escaped from a high security US military base in war-torn Afghanistan

“In Afghanistan, the search for the four al-Qaida members who escaped (from a US military base) in July continues, U.S. military spokesman Lt. Mike Cody said.

In a video believed filmed in Afghanistan and broadcast in October on Al-Arabiya, the four claimed they picked a lock and timed the escape for a Sunday when many of the Americans on the base were off duty. ”

Doesn’t it just make you feel all warm and fuzzy inside to know that the US government has spent billions of US taxpayers money hunting down evil Islamic terrorists only to allow them to escape from US military jails with a hair pin?

 

Perhaps if Senator Feingold was appraised of the full details of what goes on behind the smokescreen of the phoney “war on terror” he would eventually come to the conclusion that the US government has no more interest in successfully detaining and prosecuting “al-Qaeda terrorists” than it has in successfully detaining and prosecuting any other government employee – because that is exactly what your average “al-Qaeda terrorist” is.

FBI Admits: No Evidence Links ‘Hijackers’ to 9-1 1

After seven months of non-stop declarations by U.S. government spokesmen that there exist solid proof 19 Muslim men to plotting the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, FBI Director Robert Mueller has now admitted quite the opposite.

That 19 Muslim men who have apparently disappeared have been named as the hijackers is not in doubt.

What is in doubt is whether those 19 men were actually plotting anything, either individually or together.

The amazing possibility remains that others carried out the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, using the identities of the 19 Muslims who have been assigned guilt in the tragedy.

Mueller made this claim despite the fact that in the immediate wake of the Sept. 11 attacks, a variety of U.S. officials and media sources speciously announced, almost instantaneously, that there was firm evidence not only that these 19 Muslim men were agents of Osama bin Laden’s al Qaeda “network” but that they were indeed the individuals who hijacked the doomed flights on Sept. 11.

Mueller seems to forget that early government and media reports loudly hyped “discoveries”—letters and other documents—in the luggage and personal belongings of the presumed hijackers which “proved” that they were on a “mission for Allah,” etc.

Now Mueller’s comments seem to contradict everything that’s been said.

In a lengthy interview and in a memorandum Kabir Mohabbat has given us a detailed account and documentation to buttress his charge that the Bush administration could have had Osama bin Laden and his senior staff either delivered to the US or to allies as prisoners, or killed at their Afghan base.

WOLF BLITZER, CNN ANCHOR: One of the little publicized stories in the immediate aftermath of 9/11 was how the Bush administration helped Saudi citizens leave the United States, including relatives of Osama bin Laden and the Saudi royal family.

Writer Craig Unger of “Vanity Fair” says there’s much more to this than meets the eye, the details of which appeared in the October issue of “Vanity Fair.”

The magazine article is just part Craig Unger’s upcoming book, “House of Bush, House of Saud,” due to be released next spring.

He’s joining us now live from New York.

It is a complex relationship between these two families, but give us the gist.

What is your worst-case fear, based on the quick exodus, if you will, of relatives of Osama bin Laden, and Saudi royal family members in the United States in the immediate aftermath of 9/11, even though 15 of the 19 hijackers were Saudis?

CRAIG UNGER, “VANITY FAIR”: Right.

Well, I think the key question is, why did the Saudis get a pass?

That is, immediately after any murder, whether it is a commonplace murder or a horrible national tragedy like 9/11, one of the first things you would do would be to talk to the friends and relatives of the perpetrator.

In this case, Osama bin Laden.

And 140 Saudis, including roughly 24 members of the bin Laden family, left in the days following that without being seriously interrogated. [...]

 

 

Of course, the US government will attempt to explain away these events with stories of lax security, but rather than accepting incredible stories of incredible incompetence as an explanation for such incidents, why don’t we just digest all that I have presented here and come to the obvious conclusion – that US and Israeli intelligence agencies employ, manipulate and coerce patsy Islamic radicals to take the fall for “terror” attacks that US and Israeli intelligence agencies carry out themselves.

In the USS Liberty affair, the father of US presidential candidate John McCain led what some might call an ‘investigation”, the Naval Court of Inquiry, but what others would call a “whitewash” to help cover up the fact that combined elements of the IDF savagely and brutally attacked the Liberty, killing 34 US personnel and wounding 174.

The Israeli forces attacked with full knowledge that this was an American ship.

  In the USS Cole affair, FBI agent John O’Neil led the investigation and was getting background and info on the true attackers of the Cole when he was recalled to DC to never return to Yemen.

Why was the Cole sent to Yemen to refuel?

Refuelling is normally done at sea, so why send a US ship alone, to Yemen for refuelling?

Was the upcoming US Presidential Election A Factor?

Was a “False-Flag” needed to help the Bush / Cheney Junta win the Election?

Some sources , like the NYT, issued hit pieces on O’Neil, while others, praised him for his tireless efforts in investigating the Cole attack.

However, upon arriving in Yemen, he complained about inadequate security.

 

As his team investigated, O’Neill came into conflict with Barbara Bodine, the U.S. ambassador to Yemen.

The two had widely divergent views on how to handle searches of Yemeni property and interviews with citizens and government officials, and they only grew further apart as time progressed.

After a month in Yemen, O’Neill returned to New York 20 pounds (9 kg) lighter than when he left.

He hoped to return to that country to continue the investigation, but was blocked by Bodine and others.

He continued to investigate the Cole bombing, but eventually decided that the FBI investigation in Yemen must be pulled out due to inadequate security.

A New York Times report of August 19, 2001 suggested that O’Neill had been the subject of an “internal investigation” at the FBI.

But others praised John’s work in Yemen

But John gained the respect, and he was on the ground over there for a substantial period of time.

He gained the respect gradually of the president of the highest government officials over there, and we’ve seen the fruits of those relationships – and we still are.

Did John suspect Israeli involvement in the USS Cole bombing?

That seems to be the case, as the US ambassador to Yemen, Bodine, appealed to Secretary of State Albright to deny O’Neill’s return to Yemen to continue the investigation.

 

 

Bodine wanted O’Neill to drop his bodyguards and he became suspicious of Mossad assassination.

Bodine and Madeleine Albright finally went to the FBI Director, Louis Freeh, to remove John O’Neill from Yemen.

O’Neill retired from the FBI in August 2001 and took a job with the WTC in New York.

He was appointed by Kroll Associates, namely by the controversial managing director Jerome Hauer.

Who is Jerome Hauer?

Jerome Hauer’s deep family roots in the New York Jewish community.

Hauer’s mother, Rose Muscatine Hauer, is the retired Dean of the Beth Israel School of Nursing and the Honorary President of the New York Chapter of Hadassah, the Daughters of Zion movement that is one of the central Zionist organizations involved in the creation and maintenance of the State of Israel.

Jerome Hauer is the son of the late Milton G. Hauer and Rose Muscatine who married April 4, 1949.

His mother’s parents, Hyman David Muscatine (1881-1964) and Rebecca Bertha (nee Gartner), were Hebrew-speaking Zionists.

They both came to the United States in 1908-1909 Hyman from “Russia Poland” in 1908 and Rebecca from the Austrian Empire in 1909.

O’Neill was sent to the WTC just a day before the 9/11 attacks by the son of an avid Zionist involved in a movement that fought for the creation of Israel and is still involved in seeing that apartheid state expand and thrive.

A job in which O’Neill, like many others, were killed on 9/11 by a foreign government working in concert with subversive elements within the US government.

CIA Agent Comes Forward

“The former CIA agent who worked with the FBI’s Joint Terrorism Task Force in New York and New Jersey stated that the USS Cole was hit by a specially-configured Popeye cruise missile launched from an Israeli Dolphin-class submarine.

Israeli tests of the missile in May 2000 in the waters off Sri Lanka demonstrated it could hit a target 930 miles away.

The ex-CIA agent also stated that Ambassador Bodine threw (FBI investigator) John O’Neill and his team out of Yemen lest their investigation began uncovering evidence that the Cole was not blown up by an explosive-laden boat but by an Israeli cruise missile.

The former CIA agent said the reason for the Israeli attack was to further galvanize U.S. public opinion against both Al Qaeda and the Democrats in the weeks prior to the 2000 presidential elections.

The Bush-Cheney team could blame the Democrats for not taking the Al Qaeda threat seriously.

 

However, this is exactly the tact the Bush administration took after taking office: failure to support the CIA-FBI’s Alex Station, pressuring John O’Neill and other agents like Minneapolis agent Coleen Rowley and others across the nation who detected activity involving Arab flight students, and pulling the plug on a major data mining operation directed against Al Qaeda code named Able Danger, which was being jointly run by the DIA and the Special Operations Command. “

The article is a must-read,with many tangents and details about the real “Al Qaeda” as opposed to the myth we are hammered with on corporate media.

Much of the piece concerns John O’Neil and his thwarted investigations of “Al Qaeda.”

For example: “O’Neill was not permitted to interview Yemenis who witnessed the Cole explosion.

O’Neill was not permitted to examine the hat worn by one of the bombers in the boat nor was he allowed to examine the harbor sludge for evidence.

O’Neill was soon pulled out of Yemen and Bodine refused him and his team permission to re-enter the country.

O’Neill was getting too close to something.

In February, 2001, after Yemen’s Interior Minister Hussein Mohammed Arab made a statement that there was no evidence linking the Cole bombing to Al Qaeda (“Investigations have not so far proved, either to us or to the Americans, any link between Osama bin Laden and the Cole bombing.”), the Bush administration showed no desire to find out who actually bombed the ship.

 

They were too busy clearing the baffles for the Iraq invasion and their other agendas.

While unconfirmed, the evidence seems to fit the pattern described by Madsen, and numerous others.

Remember also Israel’s unprovoked attack on the USS Liberty (there’s a metaphor for you).

Let us not forget several nglis about Israeli tactics

4)     “By Way of Deception Thou Shalt Do War” – this is the Mossad’s motto, as relayed by former Mossad agent Victor Ostrovsky .

2) Israelis have repeatedly carried out “false flag” terrorist operations that target civilians and lay blame upon their enemies.

See: The Lavon Affiar where Israeli agents blew up even United States buildings in Egypt, and Ostrovsky, in his book, tells of a German nightclub bombing in 1986 that Mossad engineered to appear as if the Libyans had executed it.

This “False Flag” pattern is preferred by covert terror agencies.

It’s how immoral leaders terrorize their populations in order to launch aggressive wars of choice.

3) The US has conspired with Israel on many occasions.

Simply sending Israel multiple billions of dollars worth of weaponry and aid per year without cease is a fleecing of US taxpayers.

The United States has a long history of blocking United Nations punitive resolutions against illegal Israeli acts in Palestine.

 

 

4) The “ new Pearl Harbor ” mode is one that benefits Israel as well as it does its neo-con architects such as Richard Perle and Douglas Feith, who have worked on behalf of the Israeli government while plotting to hijack the American one.

Chapter 4

 

Remembering John P. O'Neill


By 1998, O'Neill had become focused on Osama bin Laden.

When his friend Chris Isham, a producer for ABC News, arranged for an interview between bin Laden and correspondent John Miller, Isham and Miller used information put together by O'Neill to formulate the questions.

After the interview aired, O'Neill pushed Isham hard to release an unedited version so he could carefully dissect it.

Later that year, two United States embassies were bombed in quick succession in Nairobi, Kenya, and Dar Es Salaam, Tanzania.

O'Neill hoped to be involved in the investigation because he had gained a tremendous knowledge of Osama bin Laden's al Qaeda terrorist network.

However, turf wars and dislike of O'Neill by some superiors in Washington first meant that the FBI's New York office was left out of the investigation, and later that O'Neill was left behind when other New York-based agents were sent to the region to pick up leads.

O'Neill's rise through the ranks at the bureau began to slow as his personal style chafed others and he made a few slip-ups by losing a bureau cell phone and Palm Pilot, improperly borrowing a car from a safe house, and losing track of a briefcase with sensitive documents for a short period.

After being passed over for multiple promotions, O'Neill was pleased to be assigned as commander of the FBI's investigation into the USS Cole bombing in October 2000.

 

However, upon arriving in Yemen, he complained about inadequate security.

As his team investigated, O'Neill came into conflict with Barbara Bodine, the U.S. ambassador to Yemen.

The two had widely divergent views on how to handle searches of Yemeni property and interviews with citizens and government officials, and they only grew further apart as time progressed.

After a month in Yemen, O'Neill returned to New York 20 pounds (9 kg) lighter than when he left.

He hoped to return to that country to continue the investigation, but was blocked by Bodine and others.

He continued to investigate the Cole bombing, but eventually decided that the FBI investigation in Yemen must be pulled out due to inadequate security.

A New York Times report of August 19, 2001 suggested that O'Neill had been the subject of an "internal investigation" at the FBI.

The report suggested that O'Neill was responsible for losing a briefcase with "highly classified information" in it, containing among other things "a description of every counterespionage and counterterrorism program in New York".

The briefcase was recovered shortly after its disappearance.

The FBI investigation was reported to have concluded that the suitcase had been snatched by local thieves involved in a series of hotel robberies, and that none of the documents had been removed or even touched.

Several people came to O'Neill's defense, suggesting that he was the subject of a "smear campaign".

 

The Times reported that O'Neill was expected to retire in late August.

New Job At The WTC

O'Neill started his new job at the World Trade Center in September 2001.

(According to New York City Police Commissioner Bernard Kerik, "That Tuesday (9-11) was his first or second day on the job.")

He was appointed by Kroll Associates, namely by the controversial managing director Jerome Hauer.

In late August, he talked to his friend Chris Isham about the job.

Jokingly, Isham said, “At least they’re not going to bomb it again”, a reference to the 1993 World Trade Center bombing.

O'Neill replied, “They’ll probably try to finish the job.”

O'Neill's remains were recovered from the World Trade Center site on September 22, 2001 and identified by Jerome Hauer.

Richard Clarke would later recall that only "parts of" O'Neill had been recovered.

It is simply impossible to examine the FBI's role in pursuing terrorism prior to 9/11 without examining the work of John O'Neill in detail.

 

However, John O'Neill will never testify before Congress.

 

He had quit the agency just two weeks prior to the September 11 attacks to serve as Director of Security at the World Trade Towers, where he died in the attacks.

 

But John O'Neill's story did not die with him.

French intelligence analysts Charles Brisard and Guillaume Dasquie claim to have met O'Neill several times last summer, and reported in their book, "bin Laden: Hidden Truth" that O'Neill had complained bitterly that the US State Department - and behind it the oil lobby who make up President Bush's entourage - blocked his attempts to prove bin Laden's guilt.

 

They quote O'Neill as stating "The main obstacles to investigate Islamic terrorism were US oil corporate interests, and the role played by Saudi Arabia in it."

 

They also charge that shortly after assuming office the Bush administration slowed down FBI investigations of Al Qaeda and terrorism in Afghanistan in order to do a deal with the Taliban for an oil pipeline across Afghanistan.

SAN’A, Yemen — Yemen has set free one of the al-Qaida masterminds of the USS Cole bombing in 2000 that killed 17 American sailors, a senior security official said Thursday.

Jamal al-Badawi, who is wanted by the FBI, was convicted in 2004 of plotting, preparing and helping carry out the USS Cole bombing and received a death sentence that was commuted to 15 years in prison.

He and 22 others, mostly al-Qaida fighters, escaped from prison in 2004.

But al-Badawi was granted his freedom after turning himself in 15 days ago and pledging loyalty to Yemeni President Ali Abdullah Saleh, said the official, speaking on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak to the media.

The official said police were told by the government to “stop all previous orders concerning measures adopted against al-Badawi.”

Witnesses told The Associated Press that al-Badawi was receiving well-wishers at his home in the al-Buraika district in Aden.

The Interior Ministry said earlier that al-Badawi voluntarily gave himself up to police, but media reports said tribal chiefs mediated his surrender after he renounced terrorism and pledged allegiance to the Yemeni leader.

Al-Badawi had escaped prison once before with nine other suspects of the Cole attack in April 2003, but was rearrested.

Al-Qaida used to have an active presence in Yemen, the ancestral home of Osama bin Laden.

 

 

The group was blamed for the bombing of the Cole and the attack on a French oil tanker that killed one person two years later.

 

Official: Police uncovered terrorist cell

Also Thursday, a second security official said police have uncovered a terrorist cell composed of four extremists who were recruiting young Yemenis to carry out suicide attacks in Iraq and elsewhere.

The four were allegedly receiving funds from abroad and were recruiting young men in their twenties from mosques and religious seminars during the Muslim holy month of Ramadan, said the official, citing their confessions.

The official spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak to the media.

Yemen does not have a law that criminalizes jihad, or holy war.

Detainees remain in prison until they either renounce their commitment to jihad or are released under pressure from family and human rights groups.

Since the suicide attack in July that killed eight Spanish tourists visiting an ancient Yemeni temple, President Saleh has said in several interviews with local papers that al-Qaida had reached a truce with the government.

Security forces have arrested a Yemeni militant involved in the 2000 bombing of the USS Cole that killed 17 American sailors, a security official said yesterday in Sanaa, Yemen.

 

The official said the man, identified only by his surname of al-Nagar, played a major role in the attack in Aden harbour by suicide bombers who rammed an explosives-laden boat into the destroyer.

 

It was not immediately clear what his exact role was in the October 12, 2000 attack, which has been blamed on Osama bin Laden's al-Qaeda network.

 

Al-Nagar was arrested earlier this month in a house in Lawdar, a town 250 km south-east the capital Sanaa.

 

Police arrested two other wanted al-Qaeda militants from Yemen in the same town this month.

 

The official did not specify when the three militants were arrested nor provide details about the two other militants.

Pentagon officials have been repeatedly blocked in their efforts to revive charges against the alleged architect of the bombing of the USS Cole due to political wrangling within the Obama administration over how and where to try accused terrorists, administration officials tell NBC News.

 

 

  Abd al-Rahim al-Nashiri, accused architect of the USS Cole bombing, is being held at Guantanamo naval base in Cuba.

But, in a move that rankled many Cole survivors at the time, the charges against al-Nashiri were withdrawn by President Barack Obama shortly after he took office last year.

His administration wanted to review how to handle the prosecution of high-value Guantanamo detainees.

As family members and crew assembled in Norfolk, Va., on Tuesday to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the attack.

The  president’s decision to withdraw the charges — and his administration's failure so far to revive the case — has re-emerged as an angry source of contention.

When the Justice Department recently filed a motion saying there were no immediate plans to bring new charges against al-Nashiri, “We were stunned,” Kirk Lippold, commander of  Cole at the time of the attack, told NBC. 

“The crew was very upset. … It’s  almost like the victims themselves are being disregarded for the sake of larger political purposes.”

White House and Justice Department officials insisted that the administration still intends to prosecute al-Nashiri, who was arrested in 2002 in the United Arab Emirates, before newly revamped military commissions in the near future and strongly denied domestic politics were a factor.

But one Defense Department official directly involved with the handling of the case (who asked not to be identified talking about sensitive internal matters) told NBC that military prosecutors have been “ready to go, go, go” on al-Nashiri for months, but have been prevented from doing so by their superiors. 

“We don’t have a date yet” for reviving the charges, the official said. When he and other military officials have asked about the delay, they’ve been told, “The administration wants to wait until after the election to go forward,” the official added.

A senior administration official who has participated in high-level deliberations about al-Nashiri and other Guantanamo cases confirmed there was a high-level roadblock, but did not acknowledge any explicit references to next month’s elections

 

The Defense Department “has been pushing to jump-start the case” against al-Nashiri for some time, but there’s been “paralysis” over the issue, the official said, indicating that major issues about where to try accused terrorists — before revamped military commissions, as many in the Pentagon prefer, or in civilian courts — remain unresolved.

“There’s been no clear interagency decision to move forward” on al-Nashiri, added this official, who also asked to remain anonymous because of the sensitivity of the issue.

Some in the administration — especially State Department legal adviser Harold Koh — have argued against proceeding with military commission cases against al-Nashiri and others right now, the official said.

The stated concern: Trying more accused terrorists before military commissions at Guantanamo would hurt the U.S. image abroad and undermine the administration’s stated commitment to the rule of the law when the president has yet to resolve the even more rancorous and high-profile debate over where to try Khalid Sheikh Mohammed and the other alleged 9/11 conspirators.

Despite assertions last spring by Attorney General Eric Holder that a final decision on the 9/11 case was only “weeks” away, that too now appears to have been put off until after next month’s elections. 

Koh did not respond to a request for comment and White House spokesman Michael Hammer did not respond directly to questions about why al-Nashiri’s case had yet to move forward. 

But in an e-mail to NBC, Hammer noted that the case against the accused Cole bomber was among five that Holder, who presided over the administration’s interagency review, had referred to the Defense Department for prosecution before revised military commissions last November.

 

“We are confident that the reformed military commissions are a lawful, fair and effective prosecutorial forum and that the Department of Defense will handle the referrals in an appropriate manner consistent with the interests of justice,” Hammer said.

The case against al-Nashiri is among the most sensitive and difficult of all those reviewed by the Obama administration.

Captured by the CIA in 2002, al-Nashiri was dispatched to a “black site” prison and subjected to “enhanced interrogation techniques” — including waterboarding, agency officials have publicly confirmed.

A CIA inspector general’s report released last year also found that agency interrogators used other unauthorized techniques against him,  including attempting to frighten him by racking a semi-automatic handgun close to his face and revving a power drill near him while he stood naked and hooded.

The treatment of al-Nashiri — and the agency’s later destruction of tapes of his waterboarding — has made trying him for his role in the Cole bombing especially difficult.

Still, Pentagon officials have expressed confidence that they can win a conviction, based on evidence unrelated to any statements elicited during his CIA interrogations.

Among that evidence are statements made by two confessed Cole plotters — Jamal al-Badawi and Fahed al-Quso — who implicated him as having engineered the attack (allegedly arranging for the purchase of explosives and the small boat used to attack the ship) during lawful interrogations conducted by the FBI in Yemen.

But Stephen Reyes, al-Nashiri’s military lawyer, insists that securing a conviction of his client will not be so easy. Neither al-Badawi nor al-Quso is currently in U.S. custody.

 

 

Both are FBI fugitives in Yemen, meaning statements they made to the FBI could only be admitted as hearsay — one reason that the administration is eager to try al-Nashiri under the more relaxed rules of military commissions rather than in federal court, said Reyes.

Whatever the forum, Reyes said he plans to make the waterboarding and other rough tactics used against al-Nashiri a major issue at any trial, especially since the government is almost certain to seek the death penalty.

“Torture is going to be a consistent theme” of his defense, Reyes said.
