FUKUSHIMINA - JAPAN — TEPCo has released first pictures of the inside of the crippled Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant building in Fukushima, since the March 11 earthquake and tsunami in Japan triggered blasts and further radiation leakage from the plant's reactor No.3.

Japan's Tokyo Electric Power faces hurdles in its plan to shut down its crippled nuclear reactors in six to nine months. The operation could be delayed or derailed altogether if unknown factors, like another powerful quake, are taken into account.

JAPAN ASKS RUSSIA FOR HELP:
Japan’s Fukushima nuclear crisis continues with the plant’s operators now asking Russia to send its floating radiation treatment plant.

The “Suzuran” has been used to decommission nuclear submarines and treats radioactive liquid with chemicals and then stores it in a cement form.

With a build-up of highly radioactive water as a consequence of trying to cool the fuel rods, engineers at the plant have been forced to release less contaminated water into the sea.

In their attempts to stop radioactive leaks, the plant owners have used anything to hand including mixing sawdust with polymers and cement to seal a suspect crack. So far, nothing has helped.

Inside Fukushima (Dead Zone)

Takashi Morizumi is a veteran Japanese photojournalist who has documented the hibakusha, or radiation victims, at nearly every nuclear disaster site around the world, including Hiroshima, Nagasaki, the former Soviet test site at Semipalatinsk, Ground Zero in Nevada, Bikini Island and Chernobyl in Ukraine.

 

The radiation levels around the partially melted-down Fukushima 1 nuclear plant are the worst he's ever experienced.

 

In the month following the March 11 earthquake and tsunami, he has led the first reporting teams that discovered the hot zone extended far inland beyond the evacuation boundary.

 

Since then, he's led two more week-long investigative journalism visits.

1. Horses of Soma were renowned for centuries as the hard-charging steeds of the samurai of the Tohoku region. Every summer, the horse races at Soma attract thousands of visitors. Today the tradition of horse-riding is threatened as these colts are now exposed to high levels of radiation in their grassy pastures.

2. Due to the extremely high radiation levels near the Fukushima 1 nuclear plant, the seaside area of South Soma...... contd..

3. ..... is the last site for these local police officers to search for bodies of tsunami victims. Police officers told the journalist team that if radiation levels had not been so high, many more residents would have been rescued.


4. Black Rain - The rainwater from this drain pipe has the highest level of radiation among all sites checked by our team of journalists in their three week-long visits to the Fukushima hot zone.




5. "Do Not Enter Due to Explosion Here" is written on the sign posted by the local police, in contrast to Tokyo Electric Power Company's claim that a less-dangerous fire had occurred. Local residents know better than that because they could hear and feel the gigantic blast.




6. An evacuated child is scanned for radiation contamination by public health staffer in Nihonmatsu City near the Fukushima 1 nuclear plant.

Inside report from Fukushima nuclear reactor evacuation zone

 

Fukushima, Japan - The Japanese government has issued the evacuation order on March 12 for the residents living within the 20 kilometer radius of the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant.

Since then, residents have left their homes, and the "no man land" has been out of touch with the rest of the world.

A Japanese journalist, Tetsuo Jimbo, ventured through the evacuation zone last Sunday, and filed the following video report.

He says that, inside the evacuation zone, homes,building, roads and bridges, which were torn down by Tsunami, are left completely untouched, and the herd of cattle and pet dogs, left behind by the owners, wonders around the town while the radiation level remains far beyond legal limits.

TOKYO, Japan – The Japanese people and operators of Fukushima Dai-ichi nuclear plant are hoping they can still fulfill the six-month roadmap they set to clear up and normalize the nuclear plant in Fukushima Dai-ichi.

This is despite what the engineers discovered on nuclear radiation inside the power plant that is now reaching the highest level, which denotes high risk to all their lives.

According to Chief Cabinet Secretary Yukio Edano, he is certain that the plant operator, Tokyo Electric Power Company (TEPCO) has considered the high radiation level inside the plant before they announced the roadmap.

The officials declared that nuclear radiation on water tank of No.2 reactor is still rising and a lot of water nearby the nuclear plant has been contaminated with radiation.

For the first time, TEPCO confirmed that the pellets of reactors 1, 2 and 3 are already melting, which implies a partial meltdown of the Fukushima Dai-ichi plant.

Nevertheless, the plant operator still wanted to declare the nuclear crisis under control within six months.

According to Tsunehisa Katsumata, chairman of Tokyo Electric Power Company, they already have scheduled a two-phase process including the construction of new cooling systems for the No.1 and No.3 reactor buildings for nuclear fuel cooling. This can also help reduce radiation level.

TEPCO is also planning to lower the nuclear fuel temperatures of the reactors to 100 degree Celsius to stabilize the condition, likewise to prevent radioactive particle leaks on air.
